Transformation of Rockwell Hall sparks improvements throughout Business School

The Business of Difference Making

Opened in 1959, Duquesne University’s Rockwell Hall has been transformed over the past seven years through gifts to the IGNITE campaign. The home of the Palumbo-Donahue School of Business has been reimagined and renovated, sparking changes to every aspect of the curriculum and student experience.

“Business is not static,” says Dean B. McFarlin, Ph.D., dean of the School. “Things are always evolving, always changing…how do you keep up with all of that?”

Duquesne’s answer has been to restructure the School around seven Centers and Institutes– bundles of faculty, educational programs, research efforts, and facilities that enhance our impact and reputation in an area or across units. These centers are important platforms for creating innovative educational programs, supporting faculty research, and building collaborative bridges inside and outside the School.

Since 2017, the School has launched academic Centers of Excellence in Entrepreneurship, Supply Chain Management and Professional Selling, along with the Investment Strategy Institute, Institute for Sustainable Innovation, and the Alfred P. Viragh, B’27, Institute for Ethics in Business.

In 2022, the Eugene P. Beard Center for Student Success opened on the seventh floor. This “one-stop shop” for student support services is an important driving force in helping Duquesne to recruit, develop, transform and place our students so they can have maximum impact in business and the world.

The new facilities throughout Rockwell Hall—many of them donor-funded—promote interaction and collaboration among students and faculty and increase opportunities for hands-on learning experiences.
